@Step 7 : Matrix Categorisation : The floors and blocks

More concentrated on exploratory methods that focuses on possibilities rather than on problem solving.
Summing up what all we have done till now in a matrix format :-

Taking out four categories from the literature study and challenge brief :-

1.Communication
2. Task management
3. Personal Archive
4. Contacts

mapping these four with to the ever changing concepts of sending/encoding, management/storage, receiving/decoding. Keywords were identified and plotted on the map. These gave us a fair idea as to what is present and what we want to be in the email system. User study, brainstorming and all other ideas were collectively brought together here.

We next move on to bring more wild ideas and try to fit those in these categories.

@Step 6 : Heuristic Evaluation of rediffmail: An existing mail client

10 Heuristic Guidelines we followed :-

he

We did a Heuristic Evaluation of an existing mail client, rediffmail. The aim was to get some insight into what is wrong with the present mail clients and how can we improve user experience in our future model of a email solution.

Image

We got a good idea of some guidelines and frameworks which needs to be adhered when coming up with any solution. Hope we will tackle these problems, genuine problems, well.

@Step 5 : User survey and Empathy Mapping..

User Surveyuser

To gauge the dependency and importance of users we prepared a survey questionnaire and did a field survey of 7 people of different backgrounds (3 students, 1 entrepreneur, 1 shopkeeper and 1 engineer) and tried to know what role an email plays in their lives.

The questions were:

  • What is an email for you?
  • What are the mail clients you use?
  • How frequently you use them and what are their prime merits and demerits you find in them?
  • What are the main features/ services of your mail client? In the next question, we asked our subjects to do a task..
    a) Send an email to one of their friend. The mail had to inform the friend about a new song from an upcoming Indian movie Krrish 3.
    b) Then he had to search the google for an Indian Actress and download her first image result. Later he needed to attach the jpeg file to the mail and send it.
    c) If your mail client is going to shut down tomorrow, what are the things you will do tonight?
  • What are the things you wish to see in your mail client in future?

Empathy Mapping

empathy
After listening to their responses and seeing them send a simple mail, we got to know a lot about how much they know their mail client and how much familiar they are to the interface. E.g. is customisation making things difficult or easy, what is their expectations from email in the coming days etc.

@Miscellaneous : What future holds for us

Image

Done.. that’s it.. I must confess we are late in posting this but yes we are really doing it. Apparently we are zeroing in on problems identified after much of the discussions. Overall we are following no linear process. Design follows its own course and we are following ours: Inventing our own method and thinking process. Hopefully we will not end in a waterfall!
A fair idea of what we want in email has been chalked out and we are in process of writing the same.

@Mini-challenge 3 : A short video (pheww!)

Video

We have no time to write. Just copy pasting the write up from the challenge series:

Mini-challenge 3: A short video

Your final mini-challenge is to create a short (less than 30 seconds) video and upload it to a hosting service such as Youtube or Vimeo. It can be on anything challenge related. Topics ranging from your thoughts about the challenge, to a video calling out the team member who fell asleep at the keyboard will be excepted. The point of this exercise is to get you thinking about how you will go about producing your video, how long finalising, uploading and so on will take.
